Cysts Flashcards
Dentigerous cyst
Second most common odontogenic developmental cyst
Develops around the crown (attached to CEJ)
Around unerupted teeth-wisdom teeth and upper canines
Usually small, but if big-can cause tooth mobility and displace other teeth
Asymptomatic and usually incidental finding
Diagnosis -histology
Squamous epithelial lining
Derived from reduced enamel epithelium
Has mucus secreting cells
Do not recur
Odontogenic keratocyst
Most common developmental odontogenic cyst
Can be part of Gorlin-goltz syndrome
High recurrence rate
Lining is friable meaning during enucleation, some satellite cells are left behind having potential to grow new cyst
Usually in angle of the mandible-difficult surgical access-pptential to recur
True cyst so squamous epithelium present, locally aggressive
Usually multi locular
Form intraosseous
Differential diagnosis-ameloblastoma and dentigerous cyst
Has thin layer or wavy parakeratin-corrugated
Nasopalatine duct cyst
Non odontogenic
Dome shaped swelling in anterior maxilla
Associated with salty taste
Heart shaped radiolucency, well defined corticated margins
Cavity contains fluid, try cyst-epithelial lining. Has both respiratory and squamous epithelium
Radicular cyst
Odontogenic origin
Epithelial lining-true cyst
Associated with root apex
Contionus corticat d margin with lamina dura of the tooth
Contains fluid
Inflammation in capsule/in origin
Dentigerous cyst
Developmental around he crown of unerupted tooth
More in male, more on mandible
Arise from enamel organ
