Cyriax Model, Postural Assess., Flashcards
4 types of postural alignment
ideal alignment
kyphotic-lordotic posture
flat-back
sway-back
in a kyphotic-lordotic posture which mms are elongated and
Nk flexors, upper BK erector spinae , EXT oblique, hammies slightly elongated but may or may not be weak
which mms are short and strong in kyphotic-lordotic posture
Nk extensors and hip flexors. The LB is strong and may or may not develop shortness
which mms are weak and elongated in a lordotic posture
ANT abdominals. Hammies are somewhat elongated but may or may not be weak
which mms are short and strong in a lordotic posture
LB and hip flexor mms
which mms are elongated and weak in a flat-back posture
one-jt hip flexors
which mms are short and strong in a flat-back posture
hammies. Abs strong. BK mms are slightly elongated but not weak. Sometimes knees are slightly flexed rather than hyperext along w/ the flat-back posture
elongated and weak mms in a sway-BK posture
one-jt hip flexors, EXT oblique, upper BK extensors, NK flexors
short and strong mms in sway-BK posture
Short and Strong: hammies, upper fibers of the INT oblique
Strong but not short: LB mms
To fully and clearly understand the pts physical problem(s) you must understand (3)
-Patients point of view (biophyscosocial)
-Therapist’s perspective
-Physical evidence
The Assessment conclusion during an interview requires what 4 critical thinking skills.
reasoning: our skills, ability to synthesize info, our own belief
Analyzing: how you select, combine and order information to construct a line of reasoning
Evaluating: whether your reasons support the conclusion you’ve drawn
Identifying: finding key points and flaws in my reasoning
order of processes of the Cyriax Model
-case history/interview
-obervation
-palpation
-selective tissue tension tests
-AROM
no set order after AROM (depends on outcomes)
-PROM
-jt play
-special tests
-RROM (mm testing)
modern alternative to Cyriax
OHIPMNRS
it’s important to go over the case Hx of pt to ensure you don’t miss any ____ ____ or _____. This will also ensure you aren’t misled by only following the obvious problem that the pt is presenting with.
red flags, precautions
Potential signs and symptoms that would indicate the problem is not a musculoskeletal one, but a more serious problem that should be referred to the appropriate
health professional.
Red flag
Signs and symptoms denoting problems that may be more severe or involve more than one area requiring a more extensive examination. Or they may relate to cautions and CI’s to treatment
yellow flags
why do we use selective tissue tension tests (STTT)
to re-create AOC/pain
if the STTT recreates the pts P then therapist can assume what
that the tissue being tested is involved in the problem
when doing these STTT we perform the test that causes P ____ and work on the ______ side first
last, unaffected
does AROM tell the true story of the ROM or strength of a mm or jt?
no, tells us functionality of that jt or mm
