Cyperaceae - Important Flashcards
Intro to Cyperaceae. Description
Grass-like plants of the order Poales. They have 3 sides stems. Stems of grasses(Poaceae) are cylindrical and hollow (think sugarcane).
Three Cyperaceae species.
Cyperus difformis Cyperus rotundus (She told Maya she's going to ask about this species. God knows what. Wait, god doesn't exist.) Cyperus esculentus (Chufa! Yum yum!)
Let’s try to recall the period of “appearance”, vegetative reproduction, and special threats of the three Cyperaceae species.
C. difformis - Spring - none - short generation period (4-6 weeks from seed to seed)
[Difform - does NOT form rhizome]
C. rotundus and C. esculentus - spring-summer - tubers formed on rhizomes - Geophyte (tubers and rhizomes survive in the soil during bad conditions (winter)). Mechanical control is complicated.
[Chufa obv forms tubers and rotundus suggests something round]
Which cyperaceae weeds are herbicide resistant.
C. difformis and C.esculentum are resistant to some herbicides
C. rotundus is not
Crops affected by Cyperaceae.
The ones with tubers - C. rotundus and ´C. esculentum affect irrigated crops (rice, corn, vegetables)
C. difformis - RICE, sugarcane, tea
