Cycling Drill and techniques Flashcards
Eating and Drinking on the Bike
Most of the calories consumed during an event will be consumed while on the bike.
Coaches should encourage athletes to practice eating and drinking on the bicycle.
Athletes should use the same type of hydration and food storage system that will be used in the event.
Eating and drinking on the bike usually involves taking one hand off the handlebars.
Some athletes choose to set an alarm to beep every 15-20 minutes as a reminder to drink and eat.
Move to the Back
Athletes who are unsure of their ability to eat and drink on the bike are encouraged to move to the back of the pack during group rides.
Less experienced athletes may need to move to an upright position to help stabilize the bike.
Food Storage
For easy handling, athletes should divide the food into small servings and place foods in an unsealed plastic bag.
If using pre-packaged food items, partially open the packaging (if feasible) prior to starting the ride.
Place the food in easy-to-reach areas. To access the food, grab the stored food items using one hand, while holding onto the handlebar with the other hand.
Drinking
Athletes should practice grabbing, drinking from and replacing the water bottle without looking down and while maintaining a straight line on a roadway.
A smooth, flat, traffic-free road is best to practice this skill until it’s more comfortable.
