Cycles of Matter Flashcards
What makes up 95% of all living things?
Carbon, Nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
What happens to the elements that make up most of living things?
Cycled through the biosphere so they are available to other living things.
What is the conversion of the elements that make up living things called?
Nutrient cycling (can be biotic or abiotic).
Water comprises how much of plant & animal tissue? How much of the human body? And how much do humans have to replace daily?
-Water comprises more than 50% of plants and animal tissue
-Water comprises 70% of the human body and humans must replace 3% daily.
Since there is a limited amount of water in the biosphere, what happens so it doesn’t run out?
It is NATURALLY recycled.
What percentage of water in the biosphere exists in liquid form? And how much is drinkable?
97% of it is liquid but only 3% is drinkable.
Water vapor is a greenhouse gas, what affect does it have on the plant then?
Readily traps and transfers heat.
What happens to water as it is cycled through the atmosphere?
It is purified and made available for organisms.
Water is a product of cellular respiration. Water produced by cellular respiration is called?
Metabolic water.
What are the 6 main components of the water cycle? What is an alternative name for the water cycle.
AKA the Hydrologic Cycle
-Precipitation
-Infiltration
-Surface run-off
-Condensation
-Evaporation
-Transpiration
What is precipitation?
Any form of water that falls from the sky. Ex. (Rain, snow, hail).
What is infiltration?
Surface water becomes ground water by moving down through the soil.
What is Surface run-off?
When soil is infiltrated to full capacity and excess water flows over the land.
What is condensation?
Water vapor returns to liquid form either by saturation or in clouds by accumulating large droplets.
What is evaporation? And where does it occur from?
-Water ends up as vapour in the atmosphere
-Evaporates from ponds lakes, rivers, and oceans.
