Cycles Flashcards
Name some transfers of Carbon through the carbon cycle
Burning, respiring, photosynthesis, death, feeding
Name some transfers of Nitrogen through the nitrogen cycles
Ammonification, Nitrification, Assimilation
Which bacteria is responsible for Ammonification?
Nitrogen fixing soil bacteria
Which bacteria is responsible for Nitrification?
Nitrifying bacteria
Which organisms are responsible for Assimilation?
Plants
What is Decomposition?
Protein in plants and dead animals is broken down. Ammonia is released into soil
What is nitrification?
Ammonia is converted to nitrites, and nitrites are converted into nitrates
What is dentrification?
Nitrates are converted to nitrogen gas. It reduces the amount of nitrate in the soil and makes the soil less fertile
What is nitrogen fixation?
Nitrogen gas converted to ammonia in bacteria which is used to make proteins, when the bacteria die their roots decompose, releasing ammonia back into the soil.
Where do some nitrogen fixing bacteria live?
In nodules on the roots of plants, they recieve glucose from the plant, while the plant absorbs ammonia from the bacteria in the nodule
