Cycle Test Flashcards
What three ways that can be used to determine if a substance is pure or not?
Measuring its boiling point, melting point or checking it’s chromatogram
What is chromatography?
A method that separates the pure substances in a mixture?
What are elements?
The most basic substances from which all materials are made
What is an atom?
The smallest particle that retains the chemical properties of an element
What are compounds
Pure substances that are formed when the atoms of two or more different elements combine in fixed proportions
What factors influence which state a substance exist?
The kinetic energy of its particles
The intermolecular forces between the particles
What do intermolecular forces do?
Hold particles together in the solid and liquid phases
How does phase change occur?
When the kinetic energy of the particles is increased allowing them to overcome the intermolecular forces and change from one phase to another
What is the temperature of a substance?
A measure of its particles average kinetic energy
What is a melting point?
The temperature at which the transition from solid to liquid occurs
What is a hearing curve?
Shows the changes in temperature of the substance during a time period while heating occurs
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons
How do you calculate relative atomic mass?
Multiply the percentage occurrence by the atomic mass for each isotope then divide by 100
What is electron configuration?
The way in which electrons are arranged around the nucleus
What is relative atomic mass
The mass of an atom of an element relative to the mass of a carbon-12 atom
