Cyber Knife Flashcards
1
Q
CyberKnife Specifics:
A
- Image-guided, frameless SRS, SRT system
- Orthogonal pair of x-ray cameras coupled to compact linac mounted to a general purpose, industrial robot
- Continuously locates and tracks skeletal features of patient in real time during treatment
- Transfers patient and target position information to robot operating system, which compensates for small changes in real-time
- Energy: 6 MV
Robotic Arm:
- 6 degrees of freedom
- Can position linac at any point within 60 cm to 100 cm distance from the target
- Precision +/- 0.5 mm
- CANNOT point more than 22 degrees above horizontal

Q
Cyberknife Advantages and Disadvantages:
A
Advantages:
- Frameless (relies heavily upon modern digital imaging)
- Real-time, continuous tracking of target position
- Achieves dose-delivery accuracy of 1mm
- Ability to perform SRS, SRT on extracranial targets (e.g., spine, lung, prostate)
- However, implanted fiducial markers may be required to provide frame of reference for targeting (synchrony device)
Disadvantages:
- Overall treatment times can be long (1-3 hours)
- Often clinics can treat ~6 patients in an 8 hr day

Q
What imaging modality does CyberKnife use for target localization?
A
Orthogonal X-ray
