Cx plexus Flashcards
How many nerves are in the cervical plexus?
8
Where do the cervical plexus nerves originate?
Anterior rami C1-5
What are the nerves of the cervical plexus?
Geniohyoid Ansa cervicalis Spinal accessory Lesser occipital Greater auricular Transverse cervical Supraclavicular Phrenic
Which nerves of the plexus are sensory, which are motor, and which are both?
There are 3 motor nerves - the nerve to geniohyoid, the ansa cervicalis, and the spinal accessory.
There is 1 mixed nerve - the phrenic.
There are 4 sensory nerves - the lesser occipital, greater auricular, transverse cervical, and supraclavicular.
Describe the nerves of the plexus including the spinal nerves they arise from, and their functions
Nerve to geniohyoid - motor nerve to suprahyoids. C1
Ansa cervicalis - motor nerve to infrahyoids. c1-3
Spinal accessory - motor nerve to SCM & traps. C1-5
Lesser occipital - skin of posterior & superior scalp. C2
Greater auricular - skin of external ear and parotid gland. C2-3
Transverse cervical - skin to anterior neck. C2-3
Supraclavicular - skin to upper thoracic. C3-5
Phrenic. sensory of the pleura, motor of the diaphragm. C3-5
