If an item is not listed in the MEL, what does this mean?
- the item is required for airworthiness
- dispatch not permitted
- some items (galley equipment, pax convenience systems,…) may not be listed
May the commander operate outside of the MEL?
Only with an operational dispensation organised via IOC from he HKCAD.
Up until what point is the MEL applicable?
Until the aircraft first starts moving under its own power for the purpose of preparing for take-off. (start of taxi)
MEL may still be considered during taxi, especially (o) and (m) procedures.
Does the MEL take multiple unserviceabilities into account?
No. The commander shall exercise good judgement as to effect of multiple unserviceabilities.
What are the rectification interval categories?
A: As specified in MEL (starting next day/flight)
B: 3 days, excluding day of discovery
C: 10days, excluding day of discovery
D: 60days, excluding day of discovery
Can extensions to the rectification intervals be made?
- Yes
- Only to Cat B, C, D
- Only by Cat E engineer
- HKCAD shall be informed within 10days
If an ADD expires at the end of the day, can you depart that day?
Yes
If the message ‘MAINT STS’ is displayed on the ECAM, what does this mean?
- We can dispatch
- Maintenance has to rectify issue within 800flight hours
What does a dash (-) in the NBR INSTALLED column of an MEL item mean?
It means there is a variable number of items installed in this system category.
What does the symbol [E] mean in the MEL?
- ETOPS related ADD
- Separate PADD must be entered if aircraft is downgraded to NON-ETOPS
What does the symbol [L] mean in the MEL?
- LVO related ADD
- A separate PADD must be raised if autoland capability is downgraded.
What does the symbol [P] mean in the MEL?
- Performance related ADD such as
- t/o, ldg perf
- ldg weight restrictions
- ETOPS restrictions
- fuel burn increase
- FL restriction/unpressurised flight
- avoid icing conditions
- RVSM, PBN, ATC related issues
- daylight ops only
- ….
What does the symbol [S] mean in the MEL?
- Significant ADD
- number of flight crew
- number of pax
- FCRC issues
- carriage of cargo issues
- No dispatch HKG items
- Items with time of less than 6 sectors or 48hrs
- ….
What does the symbol [Z] mean in the MEL?
- Cabin related ADD
- In cabin maintenance log
If a defect is deferred in the AML after a flight has returned at 0700 in the morning of the 18th, and according to the MEL the item is classified at CAT C, when will the time limit expire?
