CWI’s Flashcards
Indications of CAT tourniquet?
• Uncontrolled haemorrhage from a limb despite direct pressure
• Multiple casualty scenes where patient numbers dictate that simple haemorrhage control measures cannot
be individually applied
Contraindications of CAT tourniquet?
• Bleeding that can be controlled using basic first aid measures
Precautions of CAT tourniquet?
JVSS
• Do not apply the tourniquet over a wound or a joint
• Once applied the tourniquet must be visible – it cannot be covered by any clothing or other bandages
• This piece of equipment will be deployed in critical situations and requires regular practice to maintain familiarity and skill at quickly applying it whilst under stress
• The primary reason for failure of the CAT is excess slack in the strap when first applied*. Other reasons for sub-optimal results are too few turns of the windlass and failure to correctly work the strap-buckle mechanism.
Describe the location of where you apply the CAT tourniquet.
5-7cm proximal to the wound
According to IM medication administration, list the appropriate sites for injection and how you would prepare this insertion site?
Posterior deltoid (upper arm), gluteus medius (upper, outer quarter of buttock), vastus lateralis (lateral thigh).
1) Select appropriate site
2) Position pt with site easily assessible (remove or loosen clothing)
3) Identify landmarks for injection site
4) Thoroughly clean the injection site to cover approx 5cm x 5cm area with swab for 10 secs using side to side or up & down motion.
5) Repeat for 10secs with 2nd swab and allow to airdry
What 2 pieces of equipment are required to splint a patients forearm?
Formable spline
Crepe bandage
What cohort of patients can/cannot receive PEEP?
Adults and paeds in cardiac arrest (No pulse, No PEEP)
PEEP is indicated in neonatal resus and all patients receiving IPPV with a cardiac output
What is the minimum volume/L required for a nebulised mask?
5ml & 8L minimum
