Affordable Care Act (ACT), 2010
U.S. Federal statute mainly designed to expand access to healthcare insurance, decreased rising costs, and focus on prevention and wellness.
Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), 1967
Federal law that protects employees over 40 years of age from age-related discrimination and employment practices.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), 1990
Federal law that prohibits discrimination and employment practices based on employee’s disability. May also require accommodations for disabilities.
Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), 1985
Allows for limited continuation of group health benefits to covered employees who leave their employment under certain circumstances.
Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA), 1968
Protects employees from discharge by their employers because their wages have been garnished for any one debt. It also limits amounts that may be garnished in any one week.
Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), 1974
Sets minimum standards for most voluntarily established pensions and health plans in private industry to provide protection for individuals in these plans.
Equal Pay Act (EPA), 1963
A federal law amending the Fair Labor Standards Act, aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on sex.
Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), 2003
The ACT allows consumers to request and obtain a free credit report once every 12 months. Its primary purpose is to reduce identity theft.
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 1938
Federal law that establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, record keeping, and child labor standards affecting full- time and part-time workers.
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), 1993
Federal law that allows certain employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave each year for birth\ adoption\fostering of a child, serious health condition of the employee or child, parent, spouse or next of kin military service member.
Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA), 1935
Federal payroll (or employment) tax imposed on both employees and employers to fund Social Security and Medicare - Federal programs that provide benefits for retirees, the disabled, and children of deceased workers. The tax also provides funds to the healthcare system for institutions that provide health care for workers that do not have health insurance and cannot afford healthcare treatment. Social Security benefits include old-age, survivors, and disability insurance (OASDI); Medicare provides hospital insurance benefits for the elderly.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), 1996
Protects workers’ health insurance coverage when they change jobs, limits exclusions for pre-existing conditions, and prohibits discrimination in enrollment or premiums charged based on employees’ or dependents’ health status.
Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), 1986
Intended to prevent illegal aliens from obtaining employment in the U.S. by requiring employers to take steps to verify that a newly hired employee is eligible for employment in the U.S.
National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), 1935
Federal law that guarantees employers the right to organize and bargain collectively with their employer. The most common means is through a labor union.
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 1970
Its main goal is to ensure the safety and health of workers by setting and enforcing standards, provide training, and understanding of workplace hazards and continually striving for improvement.
