What is an ischemic stroke caused by?
Thrombotic or embolic occlusion of a cerebral artery
What is required for LOC to occur?
Defect in both hemispheres OR reticular formation (brainstem)
Where does cognition (including language) reside in the brain?
Hemisphere
Where do isolated cranial nerve deficits reside in the brain?
Brainstem
Where does vertigo result from?
Below the tentorium
Which type of defects are lateralized?
Structural defects
Which type of defects are NOT lateralized?
Metabolic defects
Ischemia to the retinal artery may result in what?
- Altitudinal defect
- Comes on suddenly (amarosis fugax)
Ischemia to the ophthalmic artery results in what?
It comes off the carotid resulting in ipsilateral symptoms (if MCA emboli, then also contralateral symps)
