Tapping hole (smaller than the thread) must be drilled into metal before an internal thread can be cut

What is a Tap?
Very hard steel tool which makes it’s own thread as it’s twisted into a hole drilled into the material

Cutting of an external (male) thread
What is the tool used for Threading?
Split die - held in die stock so it can be turned
What can threads be cut with?
Lathe
What happens to Threads in Industry?
Threads are rolled
Hard threaded rollers rotate material and press into shape = form of Cold Forging
What is Forging?
Iron and Steel heated until soft
Metal can be reformed by applying force from hammer or press
What does shaping by forging ensure?
Ensures that the natural grain flow of the material is used to strengthen the components being made
What do blacksmiths traditionally forge metals with?
Hearth to heat iron/steel
Anvil to withstand hammer blows
What is the process used for industrial forging?
Drop Forging/Die Forging
What is the process of Die Forging/Drop Forging?
A piece of white hot metal placed between 2 dies
Very large force is applied in single blow by mechanical hammer
What is cooling?
Similar cold forging process used to stamp out coins and metals
