Current Lit Flashcards
Cho et al. 2021
Aim: Examine relationship between perio and stroke/heart attack
Retrospective cohort study - 298,000 patients over 10yrs
3groups: healthy (no tx), Moderate (SRP), Severe (surgery)
Results: Increase risk of AMI and stroke in Severe perio.
Kaye et al 2021
Aim: to evaluate whether second-molar loss differed by baseline status of the adjacent third molar.
Retrospective
Conclusion: NSSD in long term risk of second molar loss between erupted and unerupted 3rd molar
no benefit in having an absent 3rd molar space
DOES NOT SUPPORT ROUTINE PROPHYLACTIC REMOVAL
Balta et al. 2021
Host Modulation and Treatment of Perio
Aim: to review host modulatory agents applied to perio patients and touch on the future potential.
Disease Modyfying Antirheumetic Drugs (DMARDs) may have additional benefit but dose/type/duration undecided.
Systemic probiotics seem promising as adjunct
Specialized Proresolving Mediators and Complement Inhibitors have high potential
Nagasaki et al. 2021
Aim: Determining if pharmacologic approaches to decrease PPi and increase Pi levels through delivery of TNAP could correct cementum defects and promote cementum regeneration.
(Inorganic Phosphate (Pi) is crucial for proper mineralization of acellular cementum)
(Mice study)
Increased Pi promoted cementogenesis
TNAP increased cementogenesis in mice with lack of sialoprotein
Local rhTNAP induced PDL attachment, promoted cementum regen, increased alveolar bone volume.
Alhassani et al 2019
The associations between major dietary patterns and risk of periodontitis
Aim: define the association of western/prudent patterns and incidence of disease over 24yr F/U.
Obese individual with highest intake of western diet had highest risk of periodontal disease.
Self reported perio????
Marini et al. 2020
Aim: to describe the consistency across time and examiners in defining stage, extent, and grade.
Periodontists were most consistent, then students, then GPs.
Education, practical skill, and calibration may increase consistency and accuracy
Stavropoulos et al. 2019
Aim: systematically assess the medium to long term outcome of perio regenerative/reconstructive procedures compared to open flap debridements and identify a hierarchy
Regen/reconstrucive therapy resulted in shallower residual PD and larger CAL gain - higher tooth survival in medium and long term.
Combination approaches appear more efficacious.
Many times only 1 to 1 comparison in techniques
Aoki et al. 2020
Aim: Compare outcomes of rhFGF-2 +DBBM vs rhFGF-2 alone in treating intrabony defects. (a 2year follow up)
rhFGF-2 + DBBM resulted in SD greater radiographic bone fill (56% vs 41%)
Slagter et al. 2020
Immediate placement of single implants with or without immediate provisional in maxillary aesthetic region: 5yr comparative study
Aim: Compare marginal bone level changes around immediate implant placement / immediate provisional (IIP/IP) vs IIP/Delayed provisional.
Mean MBL change were comparable
IIP/IP is a reliable alternative
