Current Electricity Flashcards
What is current?
The amount of electricity that is flowing around in a circuit
What does the current do? And how does it work?
The current carries energy to bulbs or other components through a cell or power pack
What happens if the circuit isn’t complete?
The current will not flow (won’t work)
What happens if there is a gap in the circuit?
The bulb will not light up (current breaks)
What is used to measure the current?
An ammeter
What are the units for current?
Amperes (A)
What is a series and parallel circuit?
Series- all the bulbs in 1 loop
Parallel- bulbs on separate branches
What happens if a bulb breaks in a parallel and series circuit?
Parallel- other bulbs will stay on
Series- other bulbs will go out
What happens if you add more bulbs to a series circuit?
Current gets smaller and bulbs get dimmer
What happens if you add more bulbs/branches to a parallel circuit?
Bulbs stay bright- easier for current to flow with more branches as there is more ways for the charges to go
What does the voltage do in a circuit?
Helps to push the charges around the circuit by a cell or power pack
How is the voltage measured? What are its units?
Using a voltmeter, the units are Volts (V)
What is voltage?
Way of measuring how much energy is being transferred by the current
What is a resistor?
Makes it harder for the electricity to flow around the circuit
What is a circuit breaker?
A safety device that cuts off the current if too much current flows
