Current Flashcards
What is current?
It’s the flow of electric charge around the circuit.
What conditions are needed to establish a current?
. Current will only flow around a closed circuit if there’s a potential difference (which moves the current) - so a current can only flow if there’s a source of pd.
What is potential difference?
Electrical energy is transferred to the electrons each time they pass thru the battery (battery maybe connected to a circuit with components, lamps/resistors. When electrons pass through the component, some of the energy of the electrons is transferred to the component, causing a difference in energy across the component - known as an electrical potential difference. The energy required to move the current from one point to another
What is charge measured in?
Coulombs (C)
What is the current like in a single closed loop?
It’s the same all around the circuit.
What is resistance?
Anything in the circuit which slows down the flow of charge.
What 2 things does the current flowing through a component depend on?
Potential difference and resistance.
The greater the resistance across a component the smaller the ……
the current that flows thru it (for a given pd across the component)
What is the formula for charge?
Q = It
I = current
t = time
What are current and time measured in?
I = A(mps)
t = s(econds)
What is a component?
In an electrical circuit, a component is any individual part that contributes to the circuit’s function. These components can be simple elements like wires, switches, and bulbs, or more complex devices like resistors, capacitors, and transistors. Each component plays a specific role in controlling the flow of electricity and achieving the desired outcome of the circuit.
