Hemolytic patterns
beta hemolysis

shows complete lysis of red blood cells resulting in complete clearing around the colonies
beta hemolysis
shows incomplete lysis of red blood cells, producing a greenish discoloration of the blood agar around the colonies
alpha hemolysis
shows no hemolysis, resulting no chsnge in the medium
gamma hemolysis
a type of nurient medium that is used for the culture of fastdious organisms such as Haemophilus sp. Heat is applied to lyse the red blood cells, causing the medium to turn brown
chocolate agar
contain one or more subsances that encourage the growth of only a specific target microorganism and inhibit the growth of others, ( prevent the growth of unwanted contaminating bacteria or commensals so only tha target bacteria will grow
selective media
contains the antibiotics trimethroprim, nystatine, vancomycin and colistin, used for the isolation of neisseria
thayer-martin agar
contains 10% NaCl and used for the isolation of staphylococcus aureus
mannitol salt sugar
promotes the grwoth of gram negative bacteria, primarily those belongin to the famil Enterobacteriaceae, and inhibits the growth of gram positive bacteria through the addition of bile salts
MacConkey Agar
a selective medium used to recover mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is made selective by the incorporation of malachite green
Lowenstein-Jensen medium
used for the isolation of the fungi
