Alpha bias (culture)
Exaggerates the differences between cultures
Beta bias (culture)
When cultural differences are ignored/minimised, and all people are assumed to be the same, resulting in universal research designs and conclusions that mistakenly assume that all cultures are the same.
Example of alpha bias (culture)
Van Ijzendoorn- suggests there was a large difference between countries infant attachment types. But, there was sometimes more differences between places in the US than different countries
Example of beta bias (culture)
Ainsworth-ignored that other cultures may want different types of attachment to the US
Example of ethnocentrism
F-scale- sees democracy as better than dictatorships
Ethnocentrism
Belief in the superiority of one’s nation or ethnic group. (May be by accident)
Imposed etic
when an observer attempts to generalize observations from one culture to another

A tendency to ignore/minimise differences between men and women

Androcentrism
Male centered; the belief that the male is the norm
Gynocentrism
Theories which are centred on, or focused on females.
