culture differences Flashcards
what is the definition of culture
a set of beliefs values and practices that characterises a group of people
what is a scientific model
states that culture does not affect diagnosis as we use a scientific model to diagnose (classification systems)
what is a spiritual model
states that culture does effect diagnosis e.g. Evrard found that hearing voices in Indian culture can be seen as a gift where as in western cultures it’s seen as having a mental health disorder
what did Myers (2010) find
cultural differences can lead to different reactions to treatment e.g. treatment for schizophrenia generated more stress for those already stressed
what 5 things did Fernando (1992) identify
- over-diagnosis of schizophrenia amongst West Indian and Asian British
- excessive use of compulsory admission for West Indian British, black patients with schizophrenia were 3 times more likely to be hospitalised
- most West Indian, African and Asian British are transferred to lock wards
- excessive admission of offender patients among west Indian British, prison rather than hospitals
- overuse of ECT among Afro Caribbean and Asian British, more likely to be given electro-convulsive therapy
what did Sue Sue (1992) find
African Americans don’t like to talk about their emotions and are less likely to admit they have a problem, less likely to talk about it with a clinician from a different culture
what did Banyard (1996) find
- in the UK 25% of patients on psychiatric wards were black whilst they only make up 5% of the population and once they are there they are more likely to be seen by a junior doctor
what is cultural stigma
in some cultures
