What is culture
Refers to the set of customs, social roles, behaviour norms and moral values that are shared by a group of people
How does culture bias relate to western countries
- psychology developed here
- researchers assumed that people from western cultures are the same people from other cultures
- may have been assumed that non-western cultures were make primitive and less worthy to study
What is alpha bias
Exaggerates the difference between cultures
What is beta bias
Ignores the difference between cultures
What is emit construct
An idea/approach that applies to only one culture
Bias may still occurred by exaggerating differences between different cultures
What is etic construct
An idea/approach that is not culturally specific and can be applied universally
What is ethnocentrism
- where our own culture is taken as the norm that we judge other cultures against
- research is centred around one culture it’s based on
What study’s related to culture bias
- asch
Study was ethnocentric because it was only done in America
Etic bias because asch generalises the results to members of groups that hadn’t actually been studied - Milgram
- American participants
- didn’t take cultures into account
- imposed etic
What are the social implications
- problematic when biased views can influence society
What are the problems with doing cross cultural research
- even with a translated it can be shed to interpret what they are saying
What are the ways of reducing cultural bias
- should recognise cultural relativism
- accepting there is no universal standards for behaviour and research done must take into account all cultures
- samples should represent the group you want to generalise to
