Ainsworth’s strange situation - misinterpreted child-rearing practices in different countries, secure and insecure attachment are biased categories, other cultures seem abnormal as they deviate from American norms

John Berry (1969) - etic and emic approach - etic looks from outside a given culture and attempts to describe in terms of universality. emic looks from inside a given culture and identifies behaviour that are specific to that culture. i.e Ainsworth - etic
