culture bias Flashcards
what is the ecological model?
-considers a child’s development, with 4 levels that interactions can occur at
what are the 4 levels of the ecological model?
-the microsystem (immediate context eg face-to-face with mother)
-the mesosystem (variety of environments a child encounters eg skl, home etc)
-the exosystem (contexts that affect the child even though they don’t go there, because it affects child’s microsystem, eg parent’s workplace)
-the macrosystem (culture in which the child grows up, directly affecting other systems)(researchers have their own which can bias their objectivity)
what is universality?
assuming the findings from one culture will apply to all cultures
typically western culture in research
what is cultural bias?
judging/treating people in relation to your own cultural beliefs/practices
what is ethnocentrism?
assuming one ethnic group is superior to others
what is cultural relativism?
the belief that it’s essential to consider the cultural context when examining behaviour
there’s no global right or wrong, it varies across cultures
what is taijin kyofusho?
a japanese syndrome where sufferers have a fear of upsetting others, blushing, and they refuse to make eye contact
in the UK this would be diagnosed as a social phobia, but would be referred to as a fear of embarrassment rather than a fear of upsetting others
how does cultural bias relate to schizophrenia?
-diagnosis - auditory hallucinations are seen as signs of powers in other cultures
how does cultural bias relate to aggression?
-evolutionary explanations imply findings are cross-cultural, but this isn’t often the case
how does cultural bias relate to cognition and development?
-vygotsky’s work was seen as ethnocentric and was criticised for cultural bias, as he worked in a collectivist culture, which potentially affected his emphasis of the role of the culture
