What is universality?
The belief that all humans are alike, so what is true for one person is true for everyone.
Theories that claim to have universality are theories that have been developed to apply to all people.
What does the term “bias” refer to?
When a person’s or society’s views are distorted in some systematic way.
There is some evidence to suggest that psychology is culturally biased.
What is culture bias?
Culture bias is when differences between cultures have not been considered properly.
It is the tendency to judge all people in terms of your own cultural assumptions, resulting in distorted or potentially distorted conclusions.
Culture bias is concerned with how researcher’s own cultural affiliations result in distorted perceptions and bias their theories and research studies.
Forms of culture bias:
Ethnocentrism
Eurocentrism
Imposed etic
Ethnocentrism
A cultural bias
The tendency to use the standards, norms and values of one’s own culture as the baseline against which other cultures can be evaluated.
See own culture as the “norm”/ desirable culture.
Eurocentrism
A form of ethnocentrism that is particularly focused on the Western world’s viewpoint.
Cultural Relativism
The idea that a behaviour can only be properly understood/only has meaning/only makes sense in the context of the norms and values of the society or culture in which it occurs.
