Define Cultural Bias?
Cultural Bias is the tendency to judge someone based on your own cultural assumptions
What is Alpha Bias in regards to Culture?
Assuming that cultures are profoundly different
What is Beta Bias in regards to Culture?
Assuming that Cultures are the same thus minimising real difference
What type of research is produced by Beta Bias?
Universal research - wholly Nomothetic conclusions
What is Ethnocentrism?
Seeing the world from ones own cultural perspective, believing that to be the normal and correct lense
What Is Cultural relativism?
The belief that the only way to understand behaviour is to take into account the cultural context
Give an example of a study which displays Ethnocentrism?
Van Lizjdoorn’s Meta-analysis of Strange situations where she was subject to Beta Bias, assuming as it worked in America it would work in other cultures like German individualist
Give an example of an experiment which displays Cultural Relativism?
Studies into intelligence found that whilst literary skills are lower in less advanced societies motor capabilities are much greater - Each is adapted to the need and thus neither is lesser
What is universality?
The idea that a theory can apply to all peoples irrespective of cultural difference
What are ethnic studies?
Studies conducted by the people within the culture as they will understand the nuance and thus impact
What can be discussed as evaluation for Culture Bias?
- Textbooks ratio of western research, specifically American research compared to other Nations
- Enforcement of Bias and Stereotypes eg: WW1 Us IQ test for enlistment validated negative stereotypes despite the education system favouring white Americans
- Overcome - Indigenous psychologists conducting research into their own cultures allow for a greater appreciation and understanding
