Globalisation and culture
Implies that culture can no longer be seen as separate from each other
Values
Beliefs and ideas that society sees as important, and that are accepted by the majority of society. (obedience, respect, knowledge)
Norms
Expected patterns of behaviour that are based on the values of a culture. (obey the teacher, do the homework, listen to the teacher)
Cultural diversity
Appreciating that society is made up of many different groups with different interests, skills, talents and needs.
Subcultures
A smaller grouping of people who share distinctive norms and values within a wider culture. They then differentiate themselves from the larger culture to which they belong. (emos, punks )
Cultural hybridity
The appreciating that society is made up of many different groups with different interests, skills, talents and needs. (Brasians)
High culture
A person needed to be associated with high social status, wealth, intellect, power and prestige. Based on products that represent the highest achievements in humanity. (opera, ballet)
Popular culture
The set of practices, beliefs, and objects that are enjoyed by the majority of a population. (watching television, reading newspapers)
Consumer culture
A culture where social status, values, and activities are centred on the purchase and consumption of goods and services.
Global culture
The growing trend of cultural products and activities becoming ‘universal’ - where brands, food, films and other cultural products are identical across many different countries, and national cultures lose their distinctiveness.
