Cultural variations Flashcards
What is a strength?
It is argued to have high population validity
Why does it have high population validity?
It was a meta-analysis of 32 strange situations studies using a large sample of 2000 infants
What does high population validity make it easier to do?
Easier to generalise the findings to the rest of the target population - increasing the external validity
What can Van’s research be criticised for?
Culture bias
Why is there culture bias?
As over half (18 out of 32) of the research studies were carried out in the US and only 5 in collectivist cultures making it difficult to generalise the findings
What else is it criticised for?
Imposed Etic
Why is there imposed etic?
It is based on American child-rearing practices and ignores practices in other cultures e.g in Germany it is common practice for independence to be encouraged in independent however they may show IA but it would be desirable for this culture
