a set of learned behaviors and symbolic systems transmitted through socialization
Culture Regions
An area characterized or dominated by a particular culture trait or cultural complex
i.e. formal, functional
Culture Complex
a collection of interrelated traits
i.e.

- French masculinity much more emotional than American masculinity

Caste system- status and profession determined by one’s family background Formal class system- Distinct dialects develop; Little upward or downward mobility Informal class system (US) Moderate upward and downward mobility
Racialization
the processes of ascribing ethnic or racial identities to a relationship, social practice, or group that did not identify itself as such.
Ethnicity
a social constructed classification system
subcultures, levels of power in a society come in to play
defined internally and externally (you are colombian but others identify you as hispanic)
Cultural Diffusion
spread of ideas, beliefs, foods, practices throughout cultures
diffuses at different rates in different subcultures
gender, ethnicity, class play a role here
Cultural appropriation
making a piece of culture ours by making it our property
Cultural Hybridization
purpose, meaning of a certain cultural tradition completely changes with use in another culture
Kecak- balinese dance, german adapted as a drama…etc
Actor Network Theory
views the world as composed of “heterogeneous things” including humans and nonhumans and objects;
recognizes that humans coexist with nonhumans in a network
i.e. bicylce, car, animal, machines…
Non-representational Theory
human life is always changing and unfolding,
Attempts to consider phenomena that are beyond words
Affect
emotions that are embodied reactions to the social and physical environment
• Power of these emotions to result in or enable action
