Culture
Learned shared beliefs, values, norms, and traditions of a particular group which guide decision making and actions
Implicit Bias
A bias we are unaware of that happens outside of our control which is influenced by our personal background and culture. They are prejudices and stereotypes that we act upon without intent.
Explicit Bias
A bias that we are aware is present and are responsible for; we must recognize as it can impact our behavior, decisions, and patient care.
Stereotyping
Assumed belief regarding a group that we must avoid. Ex. assuming all people from a country are rude
Cultural Identity
How one identifies consciously or unconsciously with those they feel a common bond because of similar traditions, behaviors, values, and beliefs.
Acculturation
Happens when one transitions from one culture and develops traits of another but still has unique cultural markers from the original.
Assimilation
When one adapts the host’s cultural values and and no longer prefers the culture of origin.
Enculturation
When one leans the traditional context and assimilates its values and practices. Ex. a hispanic grandmother teaches her grandchildren about her customs
Ethnocentrism
Evaluation of another’s culture in comparison to your own.
Cultural Humility
Lifelong process of examining own beliefs and cultural values. Continuous process of reflection and self-awareness to develop mutually respectful relations with clients.
Cultural Competence
Related but different to cultural humility, it incorporated knowledge of health related beliefs and practices as well as cultural values. It means to understand how disease and treatments affect different races and ethnicities.
Cultural Relativism
Learning about applying the standards of another culture to activities without judgement. Opposite of ethnocentrism.

RN should practice with cultural humility and inclusiveness.
Cultural Awareness
Awareness of your own view of the world and biases to other cultures. This is the first step to become more competent.
Cultural Knowledge
You must seek to obtain knowledge about culturally diverse groups such as health related beliefs, cultural values, acre practices, and disease incidence and prevalence.
