Cultural bias Flashcards
What is an example of ethnocentrism in alpha bias?
An example of the individualist attitude would be within attachment. In individulist cultures independence is valued and dependence is seen as undesirable but in collectivist cultures this is the opposite.
How can ethnocentrism lead to beta bias?
If psychologists believe their world view is the only view.
How does ethnocentrism and beta bias relate to the IQ test?
The IQ test results from ethnocentrism as it was believed it was appropriate to use American IQ tests on everyone worldwide as their was the assumption that the Americal standard was universal.
What is cultural relativism?
The idea that all cultures are worthy of respect and that in studying another culture we need to understand the way the culture sees the world.
How may cultural relativism lead to alpha bias?
May lead to alpha bias where the assumption of real differences leads to psychologists to overlook universals.
What did Mead’s research do?
Mead’s research in Papua New Guinea initially concluded that there were significant gender differences to culture but she later recognised there were universals that men in all cultures were more agressive then women.
How else is cultural relativism discussed? How does this relate to beta bias?
In defining mental disorders and in statistical infrequency behaviours that are statistically infrequent in one culture may be more common in other cultures and this can be seen with schizophrenia as a symptom is claiming to hear voices but this can be common in some cultures. By assuming that the same rules apply universally we may diagnose some people as mentally ill but that diagnosis is only relative to one culture.
