CULTURAL APPROPRIATION Flashcards
Rudinow on Racism
doctrine that presupposes that
1) there are races that genetically carry traits and characteristics distinctive of their race
2) makes moral or other distinctions (ex. aesthetic) with moral implications
Gleason on White People Singing the Blues
- blues are the black mans music
- whites are diminishing and stealing it when they perform the blues
- whites have no moral right to the blues
Rudinow on Ethnicity
- requires no genetic or biological foundation
- a matter of acknowledged culture, such as language, religion etc
- a socially conferred status, communal respect, acceptance and recognition
Rudinow on Authenticity
- a value akin to credibility
- comes from having the appropriate relationship to the original source
Rudinow on Ownership
- the blues as a genre belongs to the African-American community
- white people misappropriate the cultural heritage and intellectual property of African Americans
Problems with Ownership
- intellectual property is owned by individuals, not ethnic communities
- musical compositions count as intellectual property, not elusive elements that would encompass a style such a s the blues (timber, timing, rhythmic feel)
Rudinow on White People Singing the Blues
- the authenticity of a blues performance revolves not on the ethnicity of the performer, but the mastery of the genre and integrity of the performers use of the genre.
- this integrity comes from the performers recognition and acknowledgement of their debt to the source
Zimmerman on Cultural Appropriation
in using a different cultural for inspiration, even in acknowledging this cannot feel the pressing issues that the source culture is facing.
Young on Cultural Appropriation and Offence
when anything is profoundly offensive, we have a instinctual reaction to believe it is wrong, but not all acts of cultural appropriation are immoral
