Cuban Missle Crisis Flashcards
What was the cuban missle crises?
The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was the moment when the two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict.
Why did the cuban missle crises happen?
an American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. President Kennedy did not want the Soviet Union and Cuba to know that he had discovered the missiles.
Why did the soviets place missles in cuba?
Part of the motive was to save Cuba, but part of the motive was to get medium-range missiles closer to the United States so that they could have a deterrent effect.
What was the ‘bay of pigs’?
In early 1961 President John F. Kennedy concluded that Fidel Castro was a Soviet client working to subvert Latin America. After much debate in his administration Kennedy authorized a clandestine invasion of Cuba by a brigade of Cuban exiles.
What was the outcome of ‘the bay of pigs invasion’?
The invasion was easily defeated by Castro’s army. The failure of the invasion seriously embarrassed the young Kennedy administration. Due to all this castro was weary of the usa and was convinced the they would try kill him which pushed him closer to the ussr.
