A
  • It failed. the force of 1400 exes landed in Cuba but found themselves facing over 20,000 Cuban troops.
  • The people didnt not rise up in support of the exiles.
  • Most importantly both Castro and Khrushchev knew it had been planned by the CIA.
  • JFK was humiliated.

What was the bay of pigs?

A
  • It was led by Cuban exies, living in Florida, which was supported by JFK.
  • Weapons, training and transport were provided by the CIA.
  • The exiles hoped to establish a base for guerrilla activities against Castro and were confident that the Cuban people would support them.

Who won the CMC?

A

-Kennedy
He came out of crisis with improved rep and stood up to Krushchev.
He made no statement to taking credit for himself and instructed his staff that no interview should be given which claimed any victory as he respected Krushchev.
He also gained popularity within the USA and respect abroad.
-Krushchev (USSR)
In public he was able to highlight his role as responsible peacemaker, willing to make first move towards comprimise.
He got the USA to remove their missiles from Turkey.
The crisis exposed critisim to the USA, saying that they were hypocritical.
-Castro/Cuba
Cuba remained communist and highly armed and an important base for communist supporters in S America. Castro also kept control over US companies and other economic resources he nationalised during his revolution
-The World
Permanent hotline set up between white house and kremlin so they could communicate.
The nuclear test ban treaty that was signed in 1963
