The attempt of removal of cuban missiles sent by the USSR and the fear that Cuba would start nuclear war
Why was Cuba on the USSR’s side?
They were originally with the USA but after Eisenhower threatened Cuba’s sugar import(their main source of wealth) and so Cuba signed an agreement with the USSR that the ussr would pay for the sugar. Also american property would be conviscated from Cuba.

The bay of pigs made them feel threatened and so Cuba wanted protection.
