CTSIB Flashcards
What are the 3 systems that provide equilibrium?
- Vestibular
- Visual
- Somatosensory
What is the vestibular system?
-Internal reference
-Tell the brain where the head is in space, direction of movement, acceleration/deceleration
-2/3 info needed to balance
***Somatosensory and vision are back ups and provide substitution as external references
What is the visual system?
-External reference
-Tell the brain about the world outside
-Peripheral vision provides information about motion
-If you don’t have a strong vestibular system, you rely on vision.
What is the somatosensory system?
-External reference
-Muscle receptors in the lower leg provide from tactile contact with the surface
-Muscles proprioception in the neck (head position)
-Can’t fix this issue if they don’t have a somatosensory system for example: neuropathy
