CTG Reading Flashcards
What is the purpose of CTG?
Monitor FHR & UC
The purple transducer monitors what?
FHR
The purple transducer is placed on the mother’s abdomen where it coincides with the?
Fetus’ anterior shoulder
The pink transducer monitors what?
Uterine contractions
Mnemonic used to interpret CTG
DR. C BRA-VADO
What does the mnemonic stand for?
DR

Define risk
Contractions
Baseline Rate
Variability
Acceleration
Deceleration
Overall impression
Refers to the number of contractions in a 10 minute period
Frequency
How many contractions should be present in labor?
4-5 contractions in 10 minutes
When there is 6/10 UC, what does this indicate?
Hyperstimulation
Refers to the average heart rate of the fetus
Baseline Rate
Normal range for FHR
110-160 bpm
Some common causes for fetal tachycardia. Name 2:
- Fetal hypoxia
- Chorioamnionitis
Refers to the variation of fetal heart beat from one beat to the next
Variability
Normal range for variability
5-25 bpm
Normal variability indicates an intact ____
neurologic system and is a good indicator of how healthy a fetus is
If there are minimal variations in the variability, what should be ruled in?
- Fetal Sleep (should not be >40 minutes)
- Fetal hypoxia
- Opioids
- Magnesium sulfate
Accelerations are defined as?
Abrupt increase in FHR by >15bpm for >15 seconds
When a fetus is faced with fetal hypoxia, it is unable to increase it’s respiratory rate, so instead what does it do?
Decrease in myocardial workload to decrease the oxygen used up by the heart which would lead to decrease in FHR and hence decelerations. Oxygen are being diverted to other vital organs such as the brain.
