CT2 Flashcards
What does RAM stand for?
Random Access Memory
What does ROM stand for?
Read Only Memory
What are the features or RAM?
- Short-term memory
- Volatile
- Open applications (currently running instructions)
- Can add more ram
What are the features of ROM?
- Long-term memory
- Non-volatile
- Boot Strap loader
- Cannot add more tom: have to buy a new computer
What are the features of Primary Storage?
- Used to store programs and data that are used currently.
- Is much quicker to access than secondary storage
- Is volatile (except ROM)
What is some examples of Primary Storage?
RAM
ROM
Cache
What are the features of Secondary Storage?
- Used to store all programs and data for a computer system- long term
- Is much slower to access than primary storage
- Exists in much larger quantities than primary storage
- Is non-volatile
What is some examples of Secondary Storage?
Hard Disks
Solid State Devices
CD-ROM’s
What are some types of Secondary Storage?
- Optical
- Magnetic
- Solid-State
What are some characteristics of Secondary Storage?
- Capacity
- Cost
- Durability
- Portability
- Speed
What are some examples of Optical?
- CD-R
- RW
- DVD-R
- RW
- Blue-ray
What are some examples of Magnetic?
- Hard Disk Drive
- Tape
What are some examples of Solid-State?
- SSP
- Memory Stick
- Flash memory card
What are the characteristics of Optical Secondary Storage?
- Low capacity compared to other types of storage
- Slower access speeds
- Thin, lightweight and portable
What are the characteristics of Magnetic Secondary Storage?
- High storage capacity
- Faster access speed than optical
- Has moving parts that will eventually fail
What are the characteristics of Solid-State Secondary Storage?
- Medium storage capacity
- Fastest access speed
- No moving parts, so they are very reliable
- Low power usage
- Limited number of write cycles
- Expensive compared to other types of storage
What are some examples of Applications Software?
- Word processing
- Spreadsheet
- Presentation
- Image Processing
What is software?
It is a program or a code that controls the hardware.
What are some examples of utility programs?
- Ant-virus software
- Back up software
- Compression software
- disk defragmentation
What is utility programs?
They ensure the system runs smoothly
What is open source software?
Allows free access to the software and its source code.
What is closed source software?
Requires users to pay for a licence and source code his hidden.
What does Applications software do?
Performs tasks for the user
What are some examples of operating systems?
Windows II
Mac OS
Ios
Android-Free
Linux-Free
