What is Development?
Development is a process of change whereby people’s lives will get better.
(The standard of living and the quality of life of its human inhabitants).

Fertility Rate
Average number of children that would be born per woman if all women lived to the end of their child bearing age.

Number of babies born per 1000 people, per year.

Infant mortality
The number of deaths of infants under 1 year per 1000 live births.

GNI per capita
(Gross National Income)
The total income received by the country from its residents and businesses regardless of whether they are located in the country.

The average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year.
Reasons for the development gap (6bp)
Institutions
- Governments: democratic elections (clan based thinking)
- Royal family: lots of money and power (tourism)
- Education
- Military (protects country)
- No corruption
- HICs have good institutions.

Culture
Religion
- Follow their god
- Only care about the next life
- More religious = poorer society.
(This is true for lots except for protestants (US & UK)
Reasons for the development gap
Geography (5bp)
- Diseases: tsetse fly that gives fatigue to cows and people.
- Natural resources: corruption.
- Landlocked countries.
- Low carbohydrate plants.
- Closer to the equator means less nutritious soil.
