CSIM1.69 Asbestosis And Lung D/z Flashcards
What is the difference between restrictive and obstructive lung diseases
Restrictive inteferes in filling of the lungs, reduced lung elasticity - normal FEV1 but lowered TLC
Obstructive diseases interferes in airway conduction - lowered FEV1 but normal TLC
What characterises interstitial lung diseases?
Chronic inflammation and fibrosis of alvbeolar instersitium
What is pneimoconiosis?
A type of ILD, caused by inhalation of foreign particles that cause inflammation and fibrosis.
Difference between two forms of asbestos?
Serpentine - curly and soft
Amphibole - sharp and rigid (causes more damage)
What kind of diseases can asbestos exposure cause?
Asbestosis, bronchogenic carcinoma, pleural disease, malignant mesothelioma and other tumors
What does coal miners lungs look like?
Coal deposits, blackened areas AKA “anthracosis”
Usually subclinical.
Very severe can causes symptoms due to large amounts of fibrosis.
What does silica exposure cause?
Silocosis
Nodular dense pulmonary fibrosis caused by macrophage activation, fibroblast and collagen deposition -> coallagenous nodules in upper lungs
What does asbestosis look like under the microscope?
Fibrosis, inflammatory cells, destruction of alveolar air sacs.
Golden brown asbestos particles due to iron coating.
Macroscopic characteristic of asbestose lungs?
“Honey comb lungs” - due to cysts and fibrotic tissue.
What is mesothelioma?
Cancer of the pleura, does not derive from lung tissue.
Symptoms of mesothelioma?
Chest pain, SOB, effusions.
