an interactive system that helps manager with unstructured decisions

- may take data from tps or mis
- provides special analysis and reports
- may use models
Expert system
a system that can mimic the decision making abilities of human experts
- can answer complex if then and what if
- can use incomplete and uncertain data
- specialise in a particular subject area
