CS Chap #1 (Sub-topic 1.2: Multimedia) Flashcards
Bit-Map image
system that uses pixels to make up an image
Pixel
the smallest element in an electronic image
Colour Depth
number of bits used to represent the colours in a pixel
Bit Depth
The number of bits used to encode each sample during digitization.
Image Resolution
The number of pixels in an image
Screen Resolution
The number of horizontal and vertical pixels that make up an image.
Pixel Density
number of pixels per unit area
Vector Graphics
Vector Graphics
Sampling Resolution
number of bits used to represent sound amplitude
Sampling rate
Number of sound samples taken per second
Frame rate
Number of video frames taken per second
How to find pixel density
- Add squares of resolution size.
- Find square root.
- Divide by screen size.

Difference between Vector Graphic image and Bit-map image
- Made of Geometric shapes (with attributes) ———
Made up of pixels (different colors) - To edit we need to change each shape ———
To edit we can alter each pixel to change design - Small file size (b/c made of geometric shapes) ———
Large file size (b/c made of many pixels) - Not usually realistic (b/c made of geometric shapes) ———
Very realistic (b/c made of many pixels) - File format:
.svg, .cgm, .odg ———
.jpeg, .bmp, .png
How sampling is used to record sound?
- Sampling rate taken
- Approximate representation of sound wave created.
- Sound wave encoded into series of binary digits.
Pros and Cons of Higher Sampling Rate
- Larger dynamic range ——— Larger file size
- Better sound quality ——— Takes longer to download
- less Sound distortion ——— Requires greater processing power
How can you edit sound?
- Duration (Stat/Stop time)
- Extract parts of sound
- Alter frequency and/or amplitude
4.Fade in and out - Mix and merge multiple sounds
- Remove ‘noise’
- convert b/w different audio formats.
