Cryotherapy Flashcards

1
Q

What is used to estimate the stage of healing and use of cold?

A

Skin temperature

Skin temp elevated = use cold

normal skin temp= no cold (impairs healing and circulation)

Skin temp temp >72 hours= suspects infection, refer to MD

Q

Cryotherapy needs to be applied within what time frame after injury to have an effect on the inflammatory process?

A

Within 5 minutes of injury

After 5 minutes, NO EFFECT because clotting has taken place

Q

Change in muscle force generation (time of application)

A

ice for <5 min = increase in isometric strength

ice for 30+ min = decrease in isometric strength for 1hr then increase for 3 hours

Q

How long is cryotherapy applied for inflammation, edema, pain, muscle spasm, muscle contraction?

A

Inflammation/edema: 15 minutes (no longer than 20min)

Pain: 10-15 min (lasts for 1 hour)
