Cryosphere/volcanoes Flashcards
artic
artic ocean surrounded by land
antartic
land surrounded by ocean
causes of ice sheet growth
weak seasons so less sun in summer, low tilt, high eccentricity, aphelion in N hem summer, amount of insolation at 65N tells if there will be ice sheets in winter
how volcanoes affect climate
violent eruptions erupt to stratosphere and wind takes ash across hemisphere it is in, ash absorbs sunlight and area below is cooler
tropical volcanoes
more severe as can go in both hemispheres and cuts off more sun at equator
high latitude volcanoes
not as severe as dont cut off as much sun
criteria for volcanoes to change climate
violent eruption at equator and needs to reach both hemisphere
orogeny
increases upland area which increases snow and more radiation reflected and area cools
continental drift
dictates land to ocean ratio/where land and ocean is
main driver of radiative forcing
anthropogenic
dvi
dust veil index
why are sunspots hard to quantify
cycles irregular, hard to measure. surrounded by hot faculae
