CRyokinetics and cryostrech Flashcards
Who invented cryokinetics and when?
Grant and Hayden at Brooke Amy Hospital in the 1970’s
What is cryotherapy?
Ice massage or immersion to anesthetize injured area then active exercise
What are negative effects of cold?
decreased circulation decreased metabolism decreased inflammation increased tissue stiffness increased pain and muscle spam with exercise
What are positive effects of cold?
decreased pain and muscle spasm
increased lymph flow, circulation, metabolism, and decreased tissue stiffness, atrophy, adhesions, and neural inhibitions with exercise
What injuries are cryokinetics most effective for?
acute sprains and strains
What can cause an immediate stop to any further cryotherapy techniques?
any pain during exercise
How long is the cold induced numbness (how long do you keep the ice on)?
12-20 minutes
How long does the lasting numbness last for (how long do you do exercises after icing)?
2-3 minutes
How long do you repeat the numbing sequence?
4 times
How long does it take to re-numb and area?
3-5 minutes
How many cryokinetics treatments can be done in a day?
2-3
What is the progression of cryokinetics?
- NWB AROM
- full AROM in 2-3 exercise bouts
- WB/weight shifting activities
- WB AROM
- Walking
- Strengthening
- Jogging
- Team drills
What is the advantage of cryokinetics?
It allows for exercise rehabilitation within the first 24 hours of injury
What is cryostretching good for?
muscle strains, contusions, inflammatory conditions, and muscular trigger points
What will the reduction of muscle spasm lead to?
increased flexibilty
