12
Q

differentiation of the crust

A
  • Starts with partial melting of the mantle
  • Magma works its way upwards towards
    the surface
  • Different minerals crystallise at different temperatures and pressures
  • Remaining melt contains concentrations of minerals and volatiles that crystallise at lower temperatures and pressures
  • deeper the more mafic, higher up (crust) silica based, periditites lower down

16
Q

delorite

A
  • medium sized
  • not as big as gabbros
  • mainly intrusive
17
Q

Basalt

A
  • finely grained
  • cools fastest
  • closed to surface
  • cant see with naked eye
  • magma extrusive (floor of ocean)
