what can crush injuries lead too?
A
prolonged compression–> ischemia–> necrosis

What are complications of crush injuries?
A
rhabdomyolysis can occur where muscle breaks down and releases debris, myoglobin, and CK, high risk of AKI

what are hallmark signs of rhabdomyolysis?
A
cola colored urine where it is positive for blood but negative for RBCs which is known as myoglobinuria
elevated CK of >10,000

what are normal CK levels?
A
200 IU

what are normal myoglobin levels?
A
<85 ng/mL

what are priority interventions when a patient has a crush injury?
A
- Stabilize and do not remove it
- still always ABCs
- fluid resuscitation but give warm fluids!
- monitor for compartment syndrome which is a medical emergency
