Stemhead Fitting
A fitting on the bow of a boat to which the forestay and jib tack are attached.
Turnbuckle
A screw used from tightening wire rigging.
Hatch
A covered opening in the deck.
Self-bailing Cockpit
Designed to remove water from the boat deck or cockpit area using gravity, not pumps. In short, the cokpit floor of the boat sits higher than the water level outside the boat.
Compass
An instrument that indicates direction relative to the earth’s magnetic field.
Binnacle
The stand on which the boat’s main compass is mounted.
Cockpit Locker
A large locker under the cockpit seating used to store gear.
Emergency Tiller
A small tiller that fits into the top of the rudder post which can be used to steer the boat if main equipment fails.
Saloon
The area in the accommodations used for dining and lounging.
Galley
A kitchen on a boat.
V-berth
A berth in the forward cabin that follows the shape of the hull sides.
Bilge
Th elowest interior regions of the hull.
Bilge Pump
A pump for removing water from the bilge.
Through-hull fitting
A fitting in the hull used to draw in water or to discharge it.
Seacock
A marine valve, often fitted to a through-hull fitting.
