Crude Oil C3.4 Flashcards
What is crude oil?
A mixture of different length hydrocarbons.
What are Hydrocarbons?
Compounds comprised of ONLY hydrogen and carbon atoms.
What are the first four Alkanes?
Methane Ethane Propane Butane
Remember Monkey Eats Peanut Butter.
What is the Empirical Formula?
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound.
Empirical formula for these substances
C2H6 C6H12 C6H10 C2H4O2
C2H6 ->CH3 C6H12->C2H4/CH2 C6H10->C3H5 C2H402->CH20
What is Covalent Bonding?
When covalent bonds are formed the atoms share outer shell electrons
The atoms do this so that the outer shell of electrons are full
Over all answer-> Atoms sharing outer shell electrons.
What is Cracking>?
The process of breaking long chain Hydrocarbons into smaller hydrocarbons which are more useful.
Why are long chained alkanes cracked?
So we can make more SHORT chained hydrocarbons.
What are shorter alkanes used for?
Other fuels like lubricating oils / plastics
What are limitations of formula?
-Doesn’t show bonds
+Easy for balancing equations and formula for calculating
What are limitations of structure?
-doesn’t show 3d model
+easy to draw
What are limitations of a ball and stick model?
-no way of knowing what element is what ball
+helps to know the 3d model
Properties of solids
High levels of inter molecular forces(IMF) this is why the particles are packed tightly together
Properties of liquids
Less IMF in liquids than solids allowing for a greater degree of movements in particles
Properties of gas
Least amount of IMF than greater amount of particle movement
