Crude Oil And Fuels Flashcards
Crude oil:
Is a mixture of many different compounds.
Hydrocarbon:
Hydrogen and carbon atoms
Alkanes:
C n H (2n+ 2)
Fractional distillation of oil:
Crude oil is separated into fractions using fractional distillation.
Lighter fraction make better fuels as they are easily and burn well with cleaner flames.
Burning hydrocarbon fuels:
Complete combustion:
Plenty of air, carbon and hydrogen are completely oxidised . They produce carbon dioxide + water.
Incomplete combustion:
All fossil fuels:
Oil, coal and natural gas.
Carbon dioxide turn into carbon monoxide which is a toxic gas.
Red blood feel pick it up and carry into the blood instead of oxygen.
Cracking hydrocarbons:
Large molecules broken down to smaller molecules by passing the vapour over a hot catalyst.
