crude oil Flashcards
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is a fossil fuel found in rocks
Crude oil is made over a long period of time and formed mainly from the remains of plankton, as well as other plants and animals.
What are fossil fuels?
Natural substances that can be used as a source of energy
Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and gas.
What are the main components from which crude oil is formed?
Remains of plankton, plants, and animals
These organisms died millions of years ago and were buried in mud.
Why are fossil fuels considered non-renewable?
They take so long to form that they are being used up faster than they are being formed
Fossil fuels are finite resources and will eventually run out.
What are some important uses of crude oil?
Fuel for transport, diesel oil, kerosene, heavy fuel oil, LPG
Oil provides fuel for cars, trains, and planes.
What are petrochemicals?
Compounds that come from crude oil used to make new compounds
Examples include polymers (plastics), solvents, lubricants, and detergents.
What are organic compounds?
Compounds containing carbon atoms
Most organic compounds in crude oil are hydrocarbons.
What are hydrocarbons?
Compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms
They are the main constituents of crude oil.
What is a homologous series?
Groups of compounds with similar properties
Examples include alkanes and alkenes.
How do hydrocarbon properties change with chain length?
Properties change as the chain gets longer
The shorter the chain, the more runny, less viscous, lower boiling point, and more flammable the hydrocarbon is.
Fill in the blank: Crude oil is made over a long period of time and consists of _______.
fossil fuels
True or False: All products derived from crude oil are inorganic compounds.
False
All products from crude oil are examples of organic compounds.
